The ZGS/GZH was running a “Small Grants’ open call for creatives within Zimbabwe. Creatives (Individuals), Hubs/ Creative enterprises/ organizations and Festivals were invited to apply for projects that have a clear impact story and address the theme:

“DIGITAL REBIRTH: Rebuilding & Reimagining Creative Spaces & Expression”

We are delighted to announce Nyarai Josephine Makuwa and team from Educational Puppet Shows as one of the Pop Up Open call Winners.

Nyarai Josephine Makuwa, a Programs Assistant Officer Feisty goal getter, popularly known as Jossy aka Sweetness on roadshows, is an accomplished thespian with 19 years on stage, having turned a high school passion into a career. Jossy’s portfolio of experience features projects in Theater in Education. Her contribution to community development includes performances of numerous commissioned Theater for Development plays. She is a self-taught Puppeteer and puppet designer and a script supervisor. Currently, she is working as an Arts administrator at Vuka Afrika Performing Arts Trust and is also the gender-focal person for the organization.

Their project, Educational Puppet Shows, will produce safe and educational content for children through puppetry. We intend to use puppets to educate and entertain children. Puppetry is a form of theatre or dramatic performance involving puppets’ manipulation. Puppets provide a kind of theatre to which children respond enthusiastically. Therefore, we intend to use puppet performances to educate the kids on various topics. Digitally recording and distributing it will allow for greater flexibility in designing the sets and reaching audiences.
